Children love music and singing. Living in and around Glasgow, we are lucky to have dozens of opportunities and places to go to sing with the children. Many are free or reasonably priced. There is something for every age, so don't lose another week, have fun!
Sing and Sign allows babies and parents to learn songs and sign language together. Sign language is a simple method to teach children to express themselves before they can talk. The songs are cheerful, from traditional nursery rhymes to new songs.
For babies and young children, Colourstrings offers classes teaching music, rhythm, and singing from 6 months to 5 years. Fun, lovely music and great teachers. The children learn the foundation to learn to read music later on. Classes are held in various locations around Glasgow.
Glasgow Concert Halls have numerous workshops for children from birth to 4 year old. The Music for Early Years is on Saturday mornings. Mini Music Makers takes place on Tuesday mornings. The times vary according to the children's ages. (City Halls & Old Fruitmarket Candleriggs, G1 1NQ). Mini Music Makers is organised by the National Youth Choir of Scotland and takes place at various locations across Glasgow and Edinburgh.
The RSAMD holds regular Early Years music classes aimed at children from 0 to 7 years old. Each session follows the Kodály approach to experiential learning, using singing games and rhymes as a basis for teaching the fundamental elements of music: pulse, rhythm, tempo and dynamics. The use of additional resources such as puppets, balls or scarves makes it fun and interactive. Young people from 9 to 18 move on to the Junior Academy.
Theatre Studio has a new children choir aimed at children P3 and above. It takes place on Saturday mornings 10-11am also at Hyndland Secondary School. The choir is under the direction of Miriam Walker, who conducts Theatre Studio's adult community choir. Other weekly activities also include Musical Theatre and Drama.
