In the agitation of everyday life, it is easy to let days go by without focusing on the things that matter the most to us, to let ourselves be overwhelmed by what has to be done without taking time nourish our soul. Meditation is a way of taking time for ourselves, of nourishing our soul and our body. Meditation reduces stress, anxiety and tension. It induces relaxation, self-confidence and concentration.
There are several types of meditation. You might find that one approach suits you better than another so don't hesitate to ask questions.
Inner Space offers short courses, talks and workshops encouraging spirituality in daily living include topics such as positive thinking, stress relief and self esteem. You can choose between one-day workshops and courses spread over several weeks. If you think you don't have time to meditate, the 'Meditation for Busy People' on May 8th is perhaps for you.
The Glasgow Buddhist Centre is open to all interested in meditation, yoga or tai chi. You don't need to be a Buddhist to join. 'Essentials of Meditation' is 6 weeks programme starts on Tuesday 27th, April (7.30-9.30). The Vajrayana Buddhist Centre is also open to all. The centre runs classes at the Centre close to the Kelvingrove (5, Bentinck St, G3 7SB), in Milngavie and in Partick. Check their website for locations outside Glasgow. If you work in the area, the lunchtime meditations are a way of taking a break in the middle of your day for a gentle breathing meditation.
Further afield, there are special events and retreats at the Tharpaland International Retreat Centre. Set in a Scottish forest, amidst green hills and gentle streams, Tharpaland provides retreat facilities and guidance, in an atmosphere of natural beauty, peace and silence. The simple techniques learned during the retreats can be assimilated into our everyday life.
It might be worth checking your local community centre as well. Several centres run meditation sessions for local residents.
