Dumbarton road isn't exactly the place where you would expect to go out for a nice dinner, so Pintxo is a nice surprise -- especially if you had somehow missed the fact that Pinxto had been voted one of the top 10 restaurants in Glasgow in 2008 and 2009!
The small and friendly restaurant serves tapas from the Basque region, freshly prepared, aromatic and executed to perfection.
Our party particularly enjoyed the Valencian Rice Cakes and the Toasted Almonds. The Patatas Bravas came in an aromatic tomato and Aioli (garlic) sauce. Spring is the season of English asparagus and the Chargrilled Asparagus with Manchego Flakes were tender and crunchy at the same time. The Salt Cod Croquettes were equally flavourful, and no one could resist the Chargrilled King Prawns. Apples are traditional in Basque cuisine, and the Baby Squid with Green Apple Aioli didn't disappoint.
Make sure to keep some room for dessert, although it's difficult to choose only one. Sharing is definitely the way to go here. The Manchego served with Quince Jelly is perfect. I have a thing for a Pedro Ximenez Sherry so if it's served with ice-cream, I can't resist! Or try the chocolate and orange mousse with a glass of Chilled Moscatel...
Along with cider from the Asturies, the wine list boasts some typically Spanish wines, served by the glass or the bottle. Treat yourself to some Cava (sparking wine) and transform an easy night out into a special occasion. The Syrah / Tempranillo complemented our food beautifully without breaking the bank.
If you are around at lunchtime or for an early dinner (5-7pm), the special menus enable you to try three tapas from the menu for £8.95.
Diners are welcome to come in and enjoy a glass of wine with a tapas or two, but keep in mind that the restaurant is small. As they say, book early to avoid disappointment!
